Principal Hardware Engineer
An opportunity has arisen for a Principal Hardware Engineer to join BAE Systems at either our Frimley, Weymouth or Broad Oak site. The successful Principal Hardware Engineer will be leading the physical design activities, which involves the design of hardware such as system enclosures, racks, and cabinets, and their integration into the submarine.
This is an excellent opportunity to influence the design of critical pieces of equipment, which will have a lasting impact on the capability of the Royal Navy for decades to come.
As a Principal Hardware Engineer, your main responsibilities will involve:
Providing technical oversight of design activities for hardware equipment such as enclosures and cabinets
Managing the requirements flow for hardware design through to internal and external suppliers
Carrying out acceptance activities for products submitted by supplier organisations
Leading the qualification, test, and requirements management aspects of physical design
Defining the qualification obligations for the assurance hold points during build, test and commissioning
Identification and rapid closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages and to manage the resulting change embodiment activities
Mentoring and assisting more junior members of the team in the execution of their duties
As a Principal Hardware Engineer your skills and qualifications must include:
Design engineering experience
Background within the defence industry
Experience of integration of designs on to military platforms
As Principal Hardware Engineer your skills and qualifications will ideally include:
Experience arranging and supervising on non-functional testing performed by 3rd parties
Full engineering lifecycle experience from requirements through to delivery and acceptance
DOORS software experience

Maritime Submarines – Combat Systems
Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. It currently employs approximately 7,700 people, with 500 of these working for Combat Systems across our sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Ash Vale, Broad Oak, Filton, Frimley and Weymouth.
We are currently responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of the Royal Navy's latest and most capable generation of attack submarines, as well as their intelligent Combat Systems trusted to detect threats in the naval environment.
Our Combat Systems team designs, builds, integrates and supports all of the submarine combat systems in the UK fleet – essentially, the eyes and ears of each platform. We provide through-life support for combat systems, sensors and radars, and deliver complex programmes and technologies by applying expert programme management and world-class engineering.
