Tax Assistant - Indirect Taxes

  • Internship
  • Norwich (Norfolk)

Job description

Our Tax specialist area of Aviva Technical Shared Services function is currently seeking a Tax Assistant to join them.

The Tax team is responsible for the compliance of Aviva UK entities with their UK and overseas tax reporting obligations and provides tax advice and support to the Aviva businesses in respect of all their activities.

Although the role will be available to support any of the tax work undertaken in Norwich, it will particularly focus on VAT and IPT (often collectively known as 'indirect taxes') across all Aviva UK's businesses, including Aviva Investors.

The indirect tax specialists are responsible for filing Aviva's quarterly VAT and IPT returns to HMRC and for providing advice and support to the business units on indirect taxes issues relevant to their activities.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Quarterly VAT return: assisting in the preparation of the VAT return by chasing information from business units; reviewing it; passing it for inclusion in final return numbers
  • Monthly/quarterly overseas IPT returns: supporting the IPT manager in extracting data and supplying it to our outsourced provider of overseas IPT return filing services; resolving related queries
  • Process improvement/automation: supporting the implementation of solutions aimed at improving and/or automating indirect tax systems
  • Research: supporting senior colleagues in identifying and resolving indirect tax issues by gathering information, attending calls/meetings, and progressing action points
  • Special indirect tax audits: running small projects aimed at testing systems and procedures and identifying errors and monitoring compliance
  • Reverse charge VAT: reviewing Aviva purchases to identify certain types of services received from outside the UK on which UK VAT must be self-declared
  • Settlement of intra-group VAT liabilities: reconciling the VAT control account; organising and processing payments to/from business units as part of the post VAT return clear-down

Skills & experience we are looking for:

  • Interest in learning tax (potential opportunities for support with Tax Qualifications available)
  • Must have 3 A-levels at grade BCC or above (or equivalent) or have relevant experience
  • Microsoft Excel: be comfortable with interpreting and amending spreadsheets and be capable of producing spreadsheets of your own
  • Self-organisation: good personal organisation to handle and prioritise multiple tasks for multiple colleagues
  • Influencing: getting colleagues in different business units to take actions they might have little interest or incentive to take
  • Fact finding skills: ability to be able to understand how a process or area of the business works and the confidence and tenacity to overcome obstacles that get in the way of this understanding
  • Adaptability: be comfortable with learning and using unfamiliar systems and processes
  • Written communication: be able to write clear and simple emails to a good standard

What will you get for this role?

  • Starting salary of £20,000 depending on skills, experience and qualifications
  • Generous defined contribution pension scheme
  • Annual performance related bonus and pay review
  • Holiday allowance of 25 days plus bank holidays and the option to buy/sell up to 5 additional days
  • Up to 40% discount for some Aviva products through “My Aviva Extras” plus discounts for Friends and Family (some exclusions apply)
  • Excellent range of flexible benefits to include a matching share save scheme
