DevOps Manager: Position Overview

We have an opportunity for a DevOps manager in our Central DevOps team, working with an experienced group of technical professionals to deliver next level DevOps for Aviva Canada.  This role will be primarily based out of our Markham office, occasionally working out of our Digital Garage in downtown Toronto.  However at present, the whole team is working from home.  This role will have both leadership and hands on technical accountabilities, supporting the Central DevOps Senior Manager in transforming DevOps at Aviva Canada.

The role

Collaborating with application development, data science engineering, testing, architecture, information security and infrastructure teams as part of the delivery of a wide range of technologies including Digital, APIs, Analytics and others, on both on-premises and (increasingly) cloud platforms.  Our purpose is to develop the capabilities that deliver on the promises of well executed DevOps. 

As well as leading and mentoring 3-5 members of the Central team, the ideal candidate should also have hands on experience of the tools we use and/or a strong operations/developer background.   These tools include Jenkins, Bitbucket, Artifactory, Hashicorp Vault, SonarQube, Checkmarx and Splunk.

This team works as innovators on large projects to define and deliver best practice in DevOps, using these opportunities to create patterns that can subsequently be applied to other applications in our estate. 

Operationally this team owns the tools, but pipelines, repos, etc. belong to DevOps engineers in our Delivery Centers.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills

·  2+ years’ experience in Leadership role for DevOps, Application Development or Operations.
·  8+ years’ experience Application Development/Operations.
·  A solid understanding of DevOps principles and practices and how they impact Software Delivery Performance, with ability to articulate these benefits to both technical and non-technical audiences.
·  Possesses insight into how to improve on standard DevOps metrics, challenges in doing so and strategies to address these challenges.
·  Strategic thinker, self-starter, positive outlook, persistence in face of challenges, with a passion for delivering change through technology.
·  Proactively manage the Information Security related aspects that are part of a successful DevOps practice, including vulnerability remediation, secure coding practices, segregation of duties, etc.
·  Good understanding of Version Control including branching strategies.
·  Experienced with both Kanban, Scrum and working in an Agile organization.
·  Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills.
·  Continuous improvement mindset.
·  Professional and courteous in all interactions.
·  Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
·  Good working knowledge of Containers and AWS an advantage.

Other Important Skills

·  Intermediate level scripting in Python or Groovy.
·  Aware of challenges posed by testing in a CI/CD environment.
·  Team player.
·  Detail oriented.
·  Keen learner.
