Software Development Manager

  • Seattle (King County)
  • Project / Product management

Job description

DESCRIPTION

tl;dr: We are an early-stage team addressing a multi-billion dollar opportunity through a combination of software engineering, web development, hardware development, and applied research. We are looking for managers to build and lead high-impact software engineering teams, with select opportunities to lead multiple teams. If this is intriguing, read on.

For apparel and shoes (“softlines”), the convenience, selection, and price benefits of shopping online have yet to be realized: in the US alone, these categories represent a $300 billion dollar market with only 10% of purchases being made online. Today the online shopper faces challenges on multiple fronts: discovering interesting items in a sea of products, evaluating fit, and assessing cut and other style details.

Enter the Softlines Personalized Shopping Team. Our ultimate goal is for customers to easily discover items they personally will like and to get the right size on the first try: across the globe, on laptops and mobile, through voice search, etc. I want to go to the apparel home page, see a range of items that feel hand-picked for me, and find items compelling enough to explore further. I want to search for dress shirts and find compelling search results refined based on my tastes. I want to know that this particular shirt will fit my shoulders, be tight around my waist, and be long on my arms. I'd like to see a visualization that brings out the shirt's style for me.

Our technical problems involve hardware engineering/robotics, applied science, back-end software engineering, and user interface development. We need to build and use hardware to measure products and capture other item details. We need to develop and apply quantitative algorithms (read: statistical learning/machine learning, computer vision, numerical optimization, collaborative filtering) to predict how an item will fit, predict brands that will interest a given customer, etc. We need to build software to implement these models, train them, and apply them…at Amazon scale. We need to build beautiful, intuitive, responsive user interfaces that our customers will use to discover items, evaluate fit and style, and refine our understanding of their tastes.

We are a fairly new team, so in addition to solving hard problems, you can have a huge impact on everything from the functionality we deliver for our customers, to the architecture of our systems, to the algorithms we employ, to the culture we build.

If you are interested and relate to Amazon's Leadership Principles ( https://www.amazon.jobs/principles), please apply: we would love to explore opportunities for you on our team.
