Job summary
Managing trillions of objects in storage, retrieving them in sub-x ms, building software that deploys to tens of thousands of hosts, achieving 99.999999999% (you didn’t read that wrong, that’s 11 nines!) durability. As a SDE in S3, you get to deliver these capabilities and delight our customers through teams of talented engineers and leaders.

The Storage Durability team fights entropy by continuously monitoring and identifying degraded redundancy – as well as producing novel insights in to root causes of failure. We are currently looking for Software Development Engineer to lead the development of the next generation of S3 durability services. We build innovative software solutions to provide S3 customers secure, durable, high-available and performant storage with a low cost.

We maintain a regular on-call rotation across our teams with engineers and managers all taking part to resolve the inevitable issues that arise. Key job responsibilities
A SDE within the S3 Storage Durability team owns safety of customer data, supporting the goal of 11 nines assurance that no customer data is lost. Quality of software is essential in this area since S3 customer trust assumes that data will be durable. Engineers in this role are trusted with autonomy and required to come up with solutions in a defined technical strategy. Engineers in this role are expected to mentor other engineers, work on larger components and influence the team.

A day in the life
Engineers in this role works with the team to invent, design and build software that is stable and performant. They works on project ideas with customers, stakeholders, and peers. They focuses on operational excellence, constructively identifying problems and proposing solutions. They fosters a constructive dialogue and seek resolutions in a professional way. They mentors and helps to develop others.

About the team
S3 Storage Durability team is chartered to ensure that customers’ data is safe with S3. Our goal is to be 99.999999999% (11 9s) certain that customer data is durably stored with S3. Since physical hardware naturally fails over time, then redundancy also naturally erodes. The Storage Durability team fights entropy by continuously monitoring and identifying degraded redundancy – as well as producing novel insights in to root causes of failure.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

·  1+ years of experience contributing to the system design or architecture (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems.
·  2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
·  Programming experience with at least one software programming language.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Practical experience with software engineering best practices.
• Experiencing building and maintaining mission-critical software.
• Experience building high scale distributed systems
• Be passionate about software innovation.
