Job description

DESCRIPTION

Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

We're looking for an outstanding Principal Mechanical Engineer with a successful background in structure designs and electro-mechanical systems.

The successful candidate will combine superb technical, research and analytical capabilities with a demonstrated ability to get the right things done quickly and effectively. The ideal candidate will have experience designing entire system structure, as well as detail parts and mechanical systems. They must enjoy problem solving and possess practical knowledge of prototype design and verification, as well as volume production of structures and assembly of mechanical systems.

Responsibilities include:
· Mechanical design and layout studies contributing to overall system architecture configuration selection. This is a highly cross functional role requiring extensive knowledge and experience in understanding and trading complex inputs from multiple other disciplines – Electrical, Thermal, Structural, Mechanisms, Materials, Manufacturing, Assembly and Test.
· Generation and fast iteration of concepts to provide a basis for detailed trades on subsystems.
· Apply extensive knowledge and experience in determining requirements for overall system to survive lifetime requirements in application environments.
· Optimizing design for performance vs costs (manufacture, assembly, test, materials, mass, & thermal performance to meet lifetime reliability).
· Extensive FEA structural analysis capability to inform design recommendations.
· Preparation and compilation of design review materials for design review gates.
· Test planning and schedule inputs for subsystem and full system level qualification tests.

Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in mechanical engineering or related field.
· 10+ years of experience in the design, qualification and production deployment of complex electro-mechanical systems in application environments with long term reliability.
· Excellent documentation skills
· Collaborative individual who interfaces effectively with subsystem owners and external partners to provide deep analysis in determining requirements to feed design trades, with the ability to move the ball forward with less than all the required information.
· CAD – Siemens NX (or equivalent)
· FEA capability – Ansys / FEMAP (or equivalent)

Amazon is an Equal Opportunity Employer – Minority / Women / Disability / Veteran / Gender Identity / Sexual Orientation / Age.

Desired profile

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· BSc degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
· 10+ years of experience with hands-on CAD design of complex highly constrained systems.
· 10+ years of experience in Finite Element Analysis of system concept structures to identify optimum approach for performance, cost, mass, manufacturability.
· 3+ years of experience in structural materials manufacturing and assembly
· 5+ years of experience in designing complex electro-mechanical systems to survive application environments , with demonstrable evidence of product successfully deployed in field.

Make every future a success.
