DESCRIPTION

The Amazon Redshift team, is looking for you - a performance engineer with a passion for improving the performance and scalability of large-scale enterprise cloud software.

Our cloud data warehouse Amazon Redshift manages all the work needed to set up, operate, and scale a data warehouse, from provisioning capacity and installing software to monitoring and backing up the cluster, to applying patches and upgrades. With Redshift Spectrum, our customers can easily query data from Amazon S3, thereby scaling their warehouse out to Exabytes and allowing them to integrate data in all kinds of file formats from their data lake into their analytics.

We expect you to bring relevant technical software, hardware and performance engineering expertise to bear. You are customer success obsessed and you have the ability to convert your observations into impactful product enhancements. Finally, you should have the desire to have an industry wide impact and ability to work within a fast moving, startup environment in a large company to rapidly deliver services that have a broad business impact.

We are looking for performance engineers that are passionate about performance and love to work closely with developers to create the highest quality software, reliable, and easy to use. We expect candidates to have:

· Proven ability to apply the principles of continuous performance management to Redshift and Redshift Spectrum by designing, implementing, automating, executing, analyzing and then driving and implementing improvements into Redshift in a continuous integration environment
· Ability to actively contribute in the design, implementation, and execution of agile performance engineering testing, working closely with other developers
· Translating functional and technical requirements into an enhanced automated performance measurement and evaluation framework to support continuous performance management
· Passion to actively participate in code and design reviews to maintain exceptional quality
· and deepen your understanding of the system architecture and implementation
· Demonstrated experience in ensuring that overall system performance, efficiency, and scalability objectives are met
· Ability to work closely and effectively with others to deliver and operate large scale, distributed data warehousing services in the cloud.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· PhD in Computer Science or Engineering
· Proven experience in mentoring junior performance engineers, communicating a culture of performance excellence
· Experience in working on and contributing to open source projects
· Experience with database systems internals, query optimization, understanding and tuning query access plans, and query execution instrumentation
· Deep understanding of industry-standard benchmarks such as TPC-H and TPC-DS
· Very good understanding of parallel system performance, efficiency and scalability measurement and analysis
· Experience in characterizing, debugging and correcting performance issues in large scale distributed systems via C++ prototypes

Desired profile



BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelors or Master’s in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience
· 4+ years of professional software development experience
· Experience in writing system software in a systems language such as C or C++
· 3+ years of performance engineering experience
· Experience in designing, implementing, executing and analyzing automated performance tests for complex, production system software.
· Good working knowledge of relational databases, SQL and UNIX/Linux
· Good working knowledge of the Python programming languages
· Experienced debugging, diagnosing, and troubleshooting complex, production software issues
· Excellent written and oral communication skills, sharp analytical abilities, and proven performance analysis skills
· Proven ability to drive tasks to completion, work independently and take on full ownership of projects
· Ability to work in a fast paced and agile development environment
