This role is an opportunity to approach system engineering in a unique context, where you will be able to learn and extend your capabilities in a multi-disciplinary working environment.

The position is based on Portsmouth site which is Airbus Centre of Excellence for Telecom payloads. The position being open in the specific area of Telecom missions, it provides a unique insight into the design, analysis, integration and delivery of a state of the art end-to-end communication system. This includes the telecom payload, but the role will also provide an insight into antenna, platform and spacecraft considerations and also into ground segment elements.

Tasks & accountabilities

The exact topic of the internship will have to be defined hand-in-hand with the interns and will take into account expectations / skills and abilities.

Typical topics could include:

·  Support to project work: shadow a project's Mechanical & Thermal engineer.
·  Take part to the nominal activities supported by mechanical system engineering such as mechanical configuration, structural design and analysis, specification and definition of hardware, support to payload integration, test and validation and liaison with customer representatives.
·  Support study / R&D project: carry out a well-defined work package within the Payload Mechanical Team. The topic for research / study will be defined with the mechanical system team leader and could be related to demonstrator and/or new technology.
·  Process; methods and tools: review modes of working on a given topic (proposal; support to design; performance analysis; preparation for AIT; etc.) contribute to the continuous improvement initiatives by assisting in process definition and documentation; in standardisation of methods and in tools development roadmap. This could include the development of a specific / dedicated tool or model

Typical responsibilities of the full time team members include:

·  Participation in telecom payload proposals/studies
·  System/payload requirements analysis
·  Support trade-offs of payload architectures and interfaces
·  Present design solutions to peers and manager.
·  Support / take part to design justification activities as appropriate
·  Support telecom payload mechanical system configuration
·  Analysis and structural design/verification of payload hardware sub systems or assemblies
·  Support to equipment specification development
·  Design review of payload equipment designs and interfaces
·  Support to validation and test strategy development and specification
·  Support to payload integration/test Liaison with customer representatives and participation in design reviews and meetings.
·  Endorse all aspects of payload mechanical and thermal design.
·  Work at transverse level with other groups such as the Mechanical Design Office, Purchasing, equipment suppliers and Assembly and Integration Test teams.

Required skills

Please note our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

·  Studying towards an Engineering / Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent
·  Basic knowledge of computer programming
·  Proficient in MS Office applications, especially Microsoft Excel
·  Experience with modelling tools would be a plus
