Description of the job

A vacancy for a Systems Design Authority has arisen at Airbus Defence and Space, Stevenage. The role will form part of the Systems Design Authority (SDA) team. This team are the responsible engineers for their specific focus of product, technology or network, owning the design baseline and providing service design consultancy to the Engineering teams. The SDA will typically engage at the preparation for PDR stage of the project and will be a key member of the design process as the design progresses.

The role is key to Airbus Defence and Space service delivery enabling project timelines and revenue. The role holder will be expected to oversee the integrity of engineered and documented designs. Ownership of assigned design baselines are key and the role holder will be expected to champion and represent the engineering disciplines during the high pressure project environment in order to avoid early life failures of the customer service.
As the technical reference in the Engineering teams, it's important that the role holder is pro active in highlighting and recommending solutions to technical requirements and issues.

Occasional travel is expected to the Ground Station installations and customer locations in the UK. As part of the role there may also be a requirement to travel to customer installations overseas.

Desired profile

Tasks & accountabilities

·  Ensure that designs are adequate and meet the customer requirement.
·  Ensure that the requirements are fully captured, managed, analysed and understood.
·  Prepare PDR designs and present where required.
·  Ensure that all design reviews run in a quality manner and add value to the engineering process (PDR, CDR, FsDR)
·  Allocate and manage the naming, numbering and network IP address schemes and conventions.
·  Capacity Planning & records (Ports, devices, modules, IOS variants).
·  Chairing Design Reviews as required, and supporting the Change Management Process as authorising signatories (RFC) for all Skynet 5, GiN based M2 and M1 services.
·  Ensure that the design requirements and design records are fully identified and configured in line with business configuration management requirements and current best practice
·  Sign-off authority for design documentation, TRR's and TRB's.
·  Primary Interface into the Support Organisation for the nominated product, or service.
·  Provide strategic consultation to engineering departments and the organisation on technology direction.
·  Supporting Incident Management escalations providing diagnosis and recommendations.
·  Ensuring that designs are consistent across our Managed Services so that efficiencies can be achieved in area's such as;
·  Reusable network configuration
·  Reusable knowledge and skills
·  Simple, reusable, consistent and robust integration to other facets of Managed Services that the design needs to plug up to.
·  Has acceptance from the wider SDA team on design strategies, which should be shared frequently

Required skills

·  Engineering degree or equivalent expert level qualifications / specialisations

The range of skills required across the SDA team is wide, they are expected to provide expert level support to the business in the following example areas:

·  IP, VOIP and MPLS systems.
·  Satellite communications systems.
·  Encryption devices including DCAP, Mini Catapan and Ectocryp.
·  Serial communication protocols.
·  Test methods and good practise.
