This internship is within the Propulsion Manufacturing Engineering Team, which is responsible for all manufacturing processes, translating design definition to detailed work instructions and manufacturing sequencing for telecommunications and ENS satellite propulsion systems. The team operates very closely with the manufacturing teams and provides close technical support to satellite manufacture. The role with be attractive to applicants who would seek to have real experience of problem solving and technical support in a manufacturing environment.

Tasks

During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;

·  Technical support to the manufacture of satellite propulsion systems, working closely with the shop floor support engineers, in order to learn spacecraft manufacturing processes first hand.
·  Analysis and improvement of existing manufacturing processes, including TiG welding, mechanical assembly, adhesive bonding and electrical harnessing. This will include;
·  Active observation and review of existing manufacturing processes.
·  Identification of areas for improvement within existing manufacturing processes working with the expertise of the manufacturing engineering team.
·  Investigate new methods and materials that could be used to improve manufacturing efficiency, drawing inputs from several disciplines.
·  Create an implementation plan for bringing in new methods and materials, clearly showing a step by step process to achieve flight worthiness.
·  Present an ROI summary and implementation plan to management.
·  Enact the implementation plan, physically create prototype models of hardware using flight materials and review methods and tooling used.

Our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

·  Understanding of basic mechanical and electrical principles, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.
·  Understanding of engineering principles related to the manufacturing sector.
·  Evidence of practical hand skills, gained through a practical degree program or experience gained through extracurricular activities / hobbies.
·  Able to work professionally with a diverse mix of stakeholders, from design engineers to operations technicians.
