Airbus in Stevenage delivers approximately 3 telecommunications spacecraft and a significant number of major subsystems and components used for Space Science every year. Major subsystems include structures, propulsion subsystems, thermal control design and hardware, antenna and components include mechanisms and coolers. Specifically, in 2020 we will launch the Solar Orbiter spacecraft and the Exomars Rover designed and manufactured in this UK team. We are also closely involved with the design and development of manned flight propulsion systems for the ORION mission’s European Service Module for which the first flight test is approaching.

The successful applicant will work alongside propulsion design engineers with varying degrees of experience, performing analyses, writing documents such as test plans, reports and requirement specifications. There are also departmental documents which will require an update such as the catalogue describing Airbus propulsion products being updated for the latest designs. Other work to be done will include research into any one of a multitude of topics such as these previously encountered topics: stress corrosion, thruster plumes chemical species and compatibility, fluids water hammer, spacecraft leakage testing. Analysis tools include Microsoft excel and Matlab.

The role also has scope to include mechanical structures work and thermal control design work in the 12 months, also work alongside experienced engineers.

Task & accountabilities:

You will carry out various design roles supporting experienced project engineers in their design activities. This could be focused on one domain on one project or covering multiple domains and may also include engineering design process and guidelines updates. Main activities will include:

·  Calculations / design analysis
·  Test requirements and test results assessment
·  Supporting detailed design and manufacturing drawings preparation and / or review.

The work can also include budgets (power, masses, and propellant), failure modes analysis and reviewing design descriptions for spacecraft elements and components. In addition, research into specific drivers such as shock or plume contamination.

Our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

·  Currently studying an Engineering or Science degree with a focus in mechanical engineering
·  Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic fluids systems
·  Examples of leadership experience, good communication skills and confidence in presenting analysis outputs and conclusions to engineering teams
