Core activities include the design, engineering and support for Airbus wings, fuel systems and landing gear Integration. We develop our people to work on systems, structures and aerodynamics research, development and test facilities.

An exciting opportunity for a Principal Modelling and Simulation Engineer – Landing Gear has arisen in Airbus Filton to participate in the development of landing gear design capability for future Airbus aircraft.

Tasks & accountabilities

The main tasks and responsibilities of this role are:

·  Identify gaps in Airbus' modelling & simulation analysis capability for future landing gears and develop integrated technical solutions
·  Plan and execute work to build Airbus' modelling & simulation capability for landing gears and equipment, identifying resource need and leading activities
·  Develop technical solutions based on digital models for rapid application, optimisation and efficient re-use, in collaboration with Airbus specialists
·  Develop technical solutions satisfying product requirements for specific aircraft
·  Ensure that technical solutions are fully validated and meet Airbus' business objectives, considering future product and operational needs
·  Develop team members' capability in the specialism.

This includes:

·  Specifying, developing and maintaining models, tools and simulation platforms for performance analysis of landing gears and their elements
·  Contributing to the deployment of modelling & simulation in the landing gear design, safety and V&V processes of the project.
·  Supporting global aircraft optimization through early stage architecture studies, prototyping and virtual testing.
·  Contributing to the development of multi-disciplinary co-simulation capabilities (loads, mechanisms, hydraulics, electrics).
·  Embedding model-based design implementation (MBSE) within landing gear design capability to enable fast and efficient development of future landing gear products
·  Contributing to design prototyping, quick issue fixing or system/aircraft analyses
·  Accountable for defining and implementing the modelling approach for future landing gear, including verification by test, and ensuring full coverage of all physical and functional attributes (e.g. hydraulic, industrial)
·  Correct application of Airbus process, methods and tools
·  Working effectively in a multi-disciplined team and with key stakeholders to deliver an integrated design solution to time, cost and quality.

Required skills

Candidates are expected to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

·  Educated to degree level in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering or Physics with relevant modules
·  Extensive experience of System Modelling (Functional and Physical) and MBSE environment
·  Experience in use of modelling packages and languages (such as Matlab-Simulink, MCS ADAMS, Amesim, sysML, FLUENT) and co-simulation
·  Experience of performing modelling and simulation of landing gears, or for similar high-performance products with requirements and challenges very similar to those for commercial aircraft
·  A good understanding of the underlying physics (hydro-mechanical, multi-body dynamics, thermo-fluid) and the ability to apply this in the field of hydraulic/mechanical systems (shock absorption, steering, extension-retraction functions are of particular interest)
·  Performing a Technical Approval role with signatory rights for data integrity
·  Experience of modelling aspects of product life-cycle from conception to disposal is of interest
·  Multi-disciplinary knowledge, curious & innovative, willing to challenge the norm and learn/continuously improve
·  Experience of activity planning and management, including familiarity with project management tools
·  Ability to determine best practice and develop rules for landing gear modelling and simulation.
·  Ability to achieve agreement through well-justified and pragmatic argument.
·  Ability to structure, record and communicate knowledge clearly and consistently
·  Ability to foster strong team working and mentor other Engineers to develop their capabilities in landing gear modelling and simulation
·  English language at negotiation level.
