Job Description

We are looking for an Optical performance, calibration and characterisation, and data processing Engineer to work on the design, development and analysis of Optical/Hyperspectral Earth Observation instrumentation. 

Reporting to the Optical Engineering Lead, you will join our Earth Observation department at Airbus Defence and Space in Portsmouth. Previous experience in optical performance analysis is essential.

You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).

Tasks & Accountabilities

· 
Responsible for the performance of optical/hyperspectral instrumentation designs, undertaking detailed performance analysis at all levels.

· 
Define calibration and characterisation strategies for optical/hyperspectral systems.

· 
Support data processing and algorithm development.

· 
Interpret and apportion customer requirement into optical system/subsystems requirements.  Perform functional analysis and decomposition of performance requirements, management of requirements traceability and verification control. Ensure adequate margins to guarantee performance over life and all operational environments.

· 
Review detailed optical analyses, including straylight, polarisation, and sensitivities. Review Opto-Mechanical Analysis.

· 
Coordinate and work with other engineering disciplines to develop robust technical solutions for the space environment and to maintain up-to-date requirement specifications on contractors or suppliers. Take into account all aspects including; reliability, failure effects, reusability, schedule, quality, cost, risk, safety and performance.

· 
Work with subcontractors and suppliers to establish realistic requirements at system level and critically review their designs and analyses, negotiating technical issues to achieve overall satisfactory performance from the system.

· 
Contribute to R&D planning, product development and technical coordination with other business units. Participate in advanced state of the art systems studies with particular emphasis on innovative ideas and concepts.

Required Skills & Experience

· 
A good understanding of optical design, analyses methods and optical tolerancing

· 
Knowledge of fabrication and testing techniques for optical components and systems

· 
Hardware development experience
