Thesis Objectives

The team HFE Development and In-Service Programs GE is responsible for the development of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for different platforms such as fighter aircraft or ground control stations. The associated tasks cover requirements engineering, HMI design and specification as also assessments for validation and verification and evaluation of arising new HMI technologies regarding their potential for innovative user interfaces.

The design of current ground control stations, e.g., for the operation of drones, mainly pay little to none attention on aesthetic, as ergonomic and functions requirements are paramount for the design.
Nevertheless, an aesthetic design does not exclude to also fulfill all ergonomic and functional requirements.
The main objective of this thesis is to realize a geometric design of a ground control station, that incorporates a display for 3D visualization, an ultrawide curved display and additionally to keyboard and mouse some more specific input-devices. To give a guideline for aesthetics the design should be based on G21 continuous curves and surfaces. The design should also take into account all ergonomic requirements applicable for computer workplaces, e.g., coming from DIN ISO 9241.

Relevant functional requirements have to be collected at the start of the thesis.

Expectations:
The candidate shall
• do a literature research regarding G2 compatible workspace designs
• collect and document relevant ergonomic and functional requirements
• develop a design which fulfills the collected requirements and also is perceived as beautiful as
also aesthetic
• realize the design as 3D model
• present and assess design in CAVE
• incorporate findings
• realize a hardware mock-up

Desired skills and qualifications

The candidate shall:
• be an enrolled student (m/f/d) within Industrial Design or a similar field of study
• be fluent in English and German
• have experience in 3D-modelling, 3D-printing and model-making
• be skilled in handcraft
• be a good team player, have excellent communication skills and be able to work independently.
