The LISA Pathfinder satellite was launched in December 2015 and operated around the Lagrange point L1 from February 2016 to June 2017. The mission goal was to demonstrate key technologies for the follow-up LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission, which aims to detect gravitational waves from astronomical sources. The Pathfinder mission proved that (a) two masses can fly through the space, untouched from the spacecraft, (b) can maintain their relative positions to the precision needed to realize the LISA observatory, and (c) their distance can be tracked by laser interferometry to assess their relative acceleration during experiments aiming to establish a physical model for environmental influences disturbing the measurements and the behavior of the masses.

The flight data of the mission have been analyzed extensively by the scientific community as well as by Airbus as Mission Prime Contractor, focusing on the science data obtained from the instrument and on the standard housekeeping data of the platform. The thesis shall establish the link between these two types of data in order to better understand in how far spacecraft operations had impact on the science data of the instrument. The focus shall be on the evaluation of thermal data, since temperature fluctuations are a major source of noise, acting on sensitive instrument elements that require high temperature stability. This is highly relevant for the future LISA mission, whose instrument requires an even more stable environment compared to LISA Pathfinder .

The complete set of flight data is available and scripts written in Matlab already exist for data read-out, filtering, and post-processing. Therefore experience with this software tool or knowledge and experience in other programming languages would be required.

Your exciting Topic:

Your duties will consist of the following steps:

· 
Getting familiar with the types of flight data (reading project documentation)

· 
Getting familiar with the methods of post-processing the flight data

· 
Improving the insight in the mission profile and mission events for the orbit period around the first Lagrange Point

· 
Establishing quantitative correlations between mission events, platform operations, and instrument operations

· 
Documentation (in English) and presentation of the work

The thesis is planned for a six month period, and shall be performed in the “Thermal Engineering & Hardware” department of Airbus Defence and Space GmbH, Friedrichshafen, Germany.

The student is responsible for supervision and acceptance of his work by the university. Circulation of results of the work to other institutions than the university needs permission of Airbus Defence and Space GmbH.
