JOB DESCRIPTION:

Summary:

This primary function is to provide 24 hour, 7 day a week "skilled trade" maintenance support to the manufacturing, research and development laboratories, warehouses, and office facilities that make up Abbott Park and its associated owned and leased lake County facilities. Abbott Park HVAC Control Technician I performs Test and Balance, HVAC control troubleshooting and logic controller PM for laboratory, BL3 and manufacturing clean room areas. The technicians also supports facility engineering on commissioning and installation of HVAC upgrades to existing control systems, assists area shops mechanics/environmental technicians with complex HVAC issues outside of their skill level. The technician performs Heating, Cooling, and Humidification controls PM throughout Abbott Park.

Major Responsibilities:

Performs advanced mechanical tasks and PM procedures on a variety of HVAC and DDC equipment throughout Abbott Lake County locations.

Work includes troubleshooting all types of control systems, ordering parts and installation of parts and material on equipment such as fans, valves, actuators, field panels, host computers, equipment controllers, and personal computers associated with the control of the units.

Also calibrates sensors, transmitters, and transducers.

May install DDC equipment utilizing a variety of tools and test equipment including laptop computers, loop calibrators, multimeters, etc.

May install & troubleshoot PC software such as Windows Insight and Data mate Advanced.

Reviews construction plans and drawings to determine the appropriateness of design and conformance to Abbott Engineering standards.

Interfaces with outside manufacturers, contractors, technicians, customers, management, etc. in the repair of failed systems and job status.

Ensures that adequate information is shared with other workers.

Participates in work group team meetings and actively looks for methods and work processes that improve productivity, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.

As required, processes paperwork such as work orders and various other forms that may be required.

Verify proper operation of HVAC systems during smoke detector testing.

The HVAC Controls Technician I will work as a multi-skill trades person, doing electrical, mechanical, building maintenance and/or other work on special assignments as required and assigned.

Also must demonstrate proficiency in the Environmental, Test & Balance, and HVAC areas.

Uses and understands current control platforms such as Apogee, Data mate Advanced, etc.

Uses these platforms to perform procedures such as monitoring alarms, generating trends, creating various reports, modifying existing graphics and programs, also can assist the B.A.S.

System Administration in routine maintenance of the system such as uploads, downloads, and backups of various databases.

A HVAC Controls Technician I will be able to run shutdowns on occupied spaces without help from group leader as well as well-versed in the use of Test and Balance tools and formulas required to trouble shoot problems within these labs.

Understand the setup, use, repair and replacement of all I/O or BAS controlled systems including but not limited to:

Current to Pressure Transducers, Controller Boards, Electric Pressure Switches, Pressure Current Sensors, Temperature to Current Sensors, and Humidity to Current Sensors.

Recommend, design, and implement control improvements for energy conservation.

Verifying proper operation of microprocessor based control loops, analog and digital inputs and outputs.

Accountability / Scope:

Failure to check, maintain, and/or operate systems according to quality assurance specifications would jeopardize product integrity and place Abbott in noncompliance with government agencies, including EPA FDA.

Errors in shutting down equipment or opening switches inappropriately could result in electrical equipment shutdown and resultant product losses in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Accidentally energizing electrical/mechanical systems and/or equipment could have life or death implications.

Failure to schedule maintenance work with Production Management could have an adverse impact on customers' operations/production.

Failure to adhere to operating instructions and/or safety policies could result in bodily injury and/or fatalities, property losses through fires, explosions, and chemical releases to self and others.

Errors in shutting down bio exhaust and clean room facilities, for example, could cause system shutdowns which would create immediate hazards to individuals.

Closing valves inappropriately could result in production and/or facility equipment shutdown and result in product losses in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Must have a high school education or equivalent. Associates Degree in HVAC/R or equivalent highly desired. Background: Minimum of 5-7 years of increasing job knowledge and formal training in the field of commercial or industrial HVAC system maintenance. A HVAC Controls Technician I will have an understanding of HVAC theory and application to air handling systems in a commercial or industrial environment.
