JOB DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for product design and development within systems engineering, simulation and design to attain strategic Division Engineering initiatives for ADD Molding and Packaging Engineering.

The Principal Product Design and Development Engineer is responsible for design, development, implementation, simulation and ongoing support of plastic molded engineering consumables that support Abbott's diagnostic instruments.

Serves as both a technical expert as well as a project manager for systems design and engineering. Works regularly with R&D, operations, quality and suppliers.

Manages part design over life-cycle to support ongoing new product development and sustaining engineering projects.

Manages phase gate and technical design reviews. Identify critical dimensions and work closely with process and tooling engineering to ensure robust component and systems design.

Must have proven ability to participate in a team atmosphere, exhibit and create a sense of urgency and maintain effective working relationships and collaboration with peers, customers and vendors.

Responsibilities:

Review product requirements and create new concepts for mechanical design of new products

Develop mechanical systems design to product specifications in compliance with company standards, procedures, specifications, and codes.

Design and develop tolerance stack analysis using 3D modeling and statistical tools

Lead design reviews for systems robustness and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA)

Prepares layout and detailed drawings including all required fits, dimensions, section views and parts lists/BOMs

Conduct platform product design assessment, evaluate alternate design solutions and generate comprehensive reports with bold and data driven conclusions

Read, challenge, develop and maintain a working knowledge of Quality Procedures and Work Instructions

Provides mechanical and industrial design engineering support to other engineers within the organization and mentor and develop junior associates

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or technical discipline such as Plastics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or industrial Engineering.

7+ years of technical work experience in systems design for the plastic injection molding industry, preferably in the medical device industry.

Design for Six Sigma and Critical Parameter Management (CPM) experience

Knowledge of plastics mold design and molding processes, mechanical behavior of polymers and DFMA.

SolidWorks and MoldFlow Certifications preferred.
