JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Mechanical Engineer. Under minimal supervision, the Mechanical Engineer II will be responsible for the detailed mechanical design and development of implantable and patient carried electronic devices. This includes origination of concepts, process/technology development, equipment/tooling specification and procurement, the origination of detailed engineering drawings, and other applicable documentation. The engineer interfaces with designers, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and other engineering groups as necessary to accomplish project deliverables within scheduled objectives. Candidate must be clear and concise in their review and creation of technical documentation, drawings, procedures and test methodology. This position interacts within a cross functional environment and requires strong verbal and written communication skills. This position requires less than 10% travel.

Impact this role will have on Abbott's:

  • Provide support to engineering teams on product development projects.
  • Develop new ideas and concepts for disclosure towards the company's intellectual property.
  • Interface with product marketing during on-site doctor visits, for the development of product requirements
  • Run empirical and experimental analysis
  • Develop and maintain all the content of design documentation.
  • Develop design verification testing and test method validation protocols, perform the required testing and write final reports
  • Identify and mitigate project risks
  • Maintains knowledge of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs, etc.).
  • Perform Engineering Changes, Corrective Actions, Manufacturing Review Board evaluations, First Article evaluations, and Supplier Evaluation Requests.
  • Provide support in addressing existing product issues and product improvements.

Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott's marketplace success:

  • 3+ years of mechanical design (preferably in the medical device industry) Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Electro-mechanical experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency or formal training in Design Controls..
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques.
  • Demonstrated proficiency or formal training in statistical methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sound design principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CAPA process and root cause investigation.
  • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (Solidworks/Creo).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Task oriented, motivated, ability to work independently as well as support group efforts when required.
  • Individual must be comfortable in clinical surroundings and be able to communicate effectively with Physicians and Field personnel when required.

Your preferred qualifications and education:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering.
  • Experience in polymer processing (injection molding, extrusion, reflow, bonding).
  • Experience in test method development.
  • Analytical design, Design for Six Sigma, or similar tool set preferred.
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.
  • Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability preferred.
