Our Internships are 12 months long (although this is flexible for some roles) and during your placement, we’ll make you an integral part of our team and give you a real job – with real responsibilities – from day one. Life in Research Development and Quality (RD&Q):
As an intern at Mondelēz International you will be responsible and fully accountable for a given project from start to finish. During the placement you will be expected to plan and execute experiments related to your project; produce technical reports/presentations and periodically communicate your key findings to stakeholders. You will also have the opportunity to interact with other departments within the RDQI organisation and the wider business and for certain roles, with suppliers. In addition to this you may also be expected to support other ongoing project activities in and outside of your immediate team. For some disciplines occasional international travel maybe required.
 
We have RD&Q centres supporting Mondelēz International research and innovation in 2 UK locations:
 
Bournville: Chocolate RDQIReading: Reading Scientific Services (RSSL) and Central Shared Service; the teams in Reading also undertake a wide range of analytical contracts for a variety of healthcare, food and pharmaceutical companies.
 
Our teams cover 3 areas:
Discover – Fundamental research to understand functional benefits of new innovations and science
Develop – Creating winning product, process, packages for the identified consumer platforms to deliver against Global consumer insights
Deploy
- Takes platforms and implements into local markets across the globe
 
Roles in the Discover area:
 
Product Ingredient Innovation (PII) (Reading):PII performs a range of product and ingredient development services and problem solving for Mondelēz International and the external food industry. As an intern, you will conduct practical programs, preparing a range of food and beverage products at laboratory scale, coordinating tastings and assisting with pilot plant scale-up trials. It is important in this area to be able to demonstrate and maintain a general awareness of food market developments and new product trends.
 
Functional Ingredients (Reading):The Functional ingredients group provides a range of analytical methods to assist customers with nutritional claim substantiation, due diligence, labelling and ingredient stability. As an intern you will work both with a team and independently to undertake a range of routine and investigative analyses. You will also develop expertise in a range of analytical methods and laboratory equipment including HPLC, GC, IC, Hunter Lab Colourimeter, Autotitrator and UV-Vis spectroscopy.
 
Ingredient Research (Reading)
This performs a range of product and ingredient development services and problem solving for Mondelēz International and the external food industry. As an intern, you will conduct practical programs, preparing a range of food and beverage products at laboratory scale, coordinating tastings and assisting with pilot plant scale-up trials. Technology Discovery (Bournville):
The technology discovery team unlocks future technology to enable the business to grow, by understanding how science and technology advances can be applied creatively to our products.  As an intern your work will be varied involving small to large scale experiments; from bench top through pilot plant to our factories.  You will be surrounded by world class experts in cocoa, chocolate and confectionery science and engineering.  You could find yourself supporting projects involved in understanding ingredients, recipe formulation, process development and efficient manufacturing to deliver exciting new products to our consumers.
 
Disciplines: Food Science, All Engineering disciplines, especially chemical and mechanical. All other scientific disciplines also considered.
 
Roles in the Develop & Deploy area:
 
Roles in Process Development (Bournville):
This team works on process equipment design; for safety, efficiency & quality, and to optimise processes for new & existing products.  As an intern, you will have the opportunity to exercise your technical creativity by analysing processes & investigating design opportunities to scope new technologies.  As part of this you will also have the opportunity to plan & execute small scale trials in the pilot plant or in the factory.   
 
Disciplines: Engineering/Food Science
 
 
Chocolate and Cocoa Development (Bournville): This team brings together scientific knowledge and creative minds to develop our most loved chocolates. This team works with cross-functional teams to develop an understanding of the key ingredients and processes and how to create even better products.  As an intern you will gain an experience of working with chocolate from small scale sample making through to industrial trials, and work on a variety of projects covering raw material sourcing, recipe optimization and process development.

Product Development (Bournville): These teams bring together scientific knowledge and creative minds to develop innovative chocolate products for our most loved brands. These teams work closely with Marketing to follow consumer insights and innovation to develop products; new and existing.  You will have a practical hands-on experience and will have the opportunity to support product development through designing products and the execution of small scale trials in pilot plant or factory and by supporting consumer test trials.

Roles that cover all 3 areas:
 
Physical Sciences (Reading)The physical properties of food & pharmaceutical products are of vital importance, in predicting & optimizing quality & behaviour during processing & storage. As an intern in this area you will perform a wide range of analyses both with a team and independently on products from the food, pharmaceutical & healthcare industries for our clients. You will develop expertise in analytical methods and operation of laboratory equipment including Karl Fischer, Malvern Mastersizer, mechanical sieving & texture analysers. 
 
Consumer Science (Reading / Wokingham)The Consumer Science department works as a partner in research projects and in the development & improvement of new & existing products, using a wide range of sensory and consumer science methodologies. As an intern you will be preparing confectionary samples for evaluation, conducting training for our sensory panels, collecting, analyzing & reporting data to support our global research programs.

Desired profile

Studying towards a Food Science, Engineering or other scientific discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Food & Nutrition, Physical Sciences, Materials Science, Physics)


2:1 degree - predicted end result  (or equivalent)

Self-drive and motivation
Naturally inquisitive and passionate about technical excellence and sciences and can apply fundamental knowledge practically
Can work with a level of autonomy, as well as works well in a team
Demonstrates strong analytical, communication and presentation abilities
Pro-active, highly motivated, ready to take on new responsibilities and build strong relationships
Organisation and planning skills
If there are opportunities, able to travel overseas, for plant trials/commissioning work and occasionally work on shift, as projects needs dictate
Good working knowledge of MS Office
