Principal Engineer - Safety
Would you like to pay a key role in the design, build and safety of the submarine combat systems in the UK fleet? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer - Safety at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Principal Engineer, you will be developing functional safety justifications for our navigation systems. You will play a major part in the safety identification workshops and safety committee meetings. This role will have the responsibility to support and mentor junior engineers.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on systems which are vital for the operation of the submarines, where you can have an impact on the direction of combat systems. The role is held in a vibrant and growing part of the business.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Safety will involve:
Developing functional safety justifications for navigation systems
Organising and chairing hazard identification workshops and safety committee meetings
Carrying out and analysing results of studies such as failure mode analysis, fault tree analysis, and reliability centred maintenance (RCM) to gather evidence to support the safety case
Engaging with third parties, such as equipment or system suppliers to gather supporting safety case evidence
Producing and maintaining safety case documentation (plans, policies and reports) to support project milestones
Conducting Risk Management in accordance with Def Stan 00-56
Mentoring and supporting junior engineers
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential
Degree level qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering field
Experience in product safety and functional safety
Experience of contributing to the development and maintenance of safety cases
Demonstrable experience of providing mentorship and supporting junior engineers
Desirable
Broad knowledge of industry standards (Def Stans/ Mil Stans)
Previous experience in defence or marine industry

Maritime Submarines – Combat Systems
Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. It currently employs approximately 7,700 people, with 500 of these working for Combat Systems across our sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Ash Vale, Broad Oak, Filton, Frimley and Weymouth.
We are currently responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of the Royal Navy's latest and most capable generation of attack submarines, as well as their intelligent Combat Systems trusted to detect threats in the naval environment.
Our Combat Systems team designs, builds, integrates and supports all of the submarine combat systems in the UK fleet – essentially, the eyes and ears of each platform. We provide through-life support for combat systems, sensors and radars, and deliver complex programmes and technologies by applying expert programme management and world-class engineering.
