Principal Electrical Engineer – Sonar Systems

Would you like to play a key role in the design and integration of sonar systems for Royal Navy submarines? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Electrical Engineer at our site in either Frimley, Weymouth or Broad Oak.

As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will be working as part of the Underwater Systems (UWS) team to deliver the physical design solution of sonar systems across multiple submarine platforms. You will be working closely with the outboard system design team and shipbuilder to ensure any changes or proposed solutions from the supplier are compliant with the base-line design, meet the required standards and are implemented in a timely manner.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Electrical Engineer – Sonar Systems will involve:

Liaising with the shipbuilder, customer, Refitting Installation Authority, Dockside Test Organisation (DTO) and supplier to resolve technical issues identified during installation activities

Supporting qualification and acceptance activities undertaken by the supplier, ensuring all necessary prime contractor furnished equipment or services are in place and if required, acting as the acceptance authority

Ensuring design proving evidence is comprehensive and where appropriate endorsed by the customer

Reviewing supplier produced documentation and ensuring that the documentation is captured in appropriate document management system and recorded in the project register

Ensuring compliance with the combat systems engineering processes

Supporting the generation of installation guidance information, through liaison with subcontractors and the shipbuilder, for the outboard sonar array items on all platforms

Providing technical support to the installation of array and array handling systems and the resolution of problems and defects arising

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Electrical Engineer – Sonar Systems:

Essential:

Electrical design engineering experience gained from complex systems

Demonstrable experience of the product lifecycle in one or more of the following phases: design, acceptance, integration, manufacturing and installation

Good understanding of requirements management

Desirable:

Experience of shipbuilder or naval dockyard working practices

You will be a self-motivated and pragmatic individual, with the ability to use your initiative to successfully solve engineering issues. You must also possess excellent verbal and written communication to enable you to articulate technical information to a variety of stakeholders.

This role will require occasional travel to attend support and installation activities on other BAE Systems sites, supplier sites and at UK Naval Bases.
