Job Purpose

The job purpose is to accelerate the development of ARM IP designs and subsystems by designing ARM development platforms using test chips and/or FPGA technology. The platforms team within the Engineering Systems Group develops both the physical hardware, firmware and FPGA images needed to perform accelerated software bring up and prototyping of ARM IP products.

The Principal Design Engineer will report into the platforms team and will be responsible for design of ARM development platforms. A broad skillset is required to take requirements from concept to production. They will be responsible for on time delivery to a high-quality level. This will include the following:

·  Ability to work independently or in a team environment to plan and deliver well documented solutions on time.
·  Working with other teams within ARM, including hardware and software developers to ensure ARM development platforms incorporate the features necessary to meet ARM’s development goals.
·  Managing interaction with external contactors and manufactures for prototype development.
·  Design, specification, debug and support of new hardware platforms.
·  Working closely with EDA vendors to debug and resolve design issues.
·  Maintain a high level of understanding of ARM technology and industry trends.

Job Requirements

Essential Skills and Experience

·  Desire to work on all aspects of our product development, including hardware, and software.
·  Experience of the full NPI cycle, from product requirement capture to production.
·  An understanding of microprocessor systems and bus architectures.
·  Ability to specify, design, debug and test systems based around complex System-on-Chips or FPGAs.
·  Experience of high speed serial interfaces, for example PCI Express or USB and memory bus technologies such as DDR3/DDR4.
·  Experienced in
·  Schematic design and capture, including part selection and symbol creation.
·  Bill of Materials management.
·  Good knowledge of PCB stack-up design and layout requirements for high speed digital design and design for manufacturing, including signal integrity analysis.
·  Working knowledge of C programming for test generation and debug.
·  Experience of hardware debug tools and debug experience using oscilloscopes and logic analysers
·  Excellent communications, organisational and personal skills
·  Flexible and adaptable to change, including desire to learn new skills.

Desirable Skills and Experience

·  Knowledge of Verilog RTL design of PLD/FPGA, simulation, debug and test.
·  Experience in a technical leadership role.
·  Experience with standard interfaces such as I2C, SPI, QSPI and parallel memory buses. Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python or TCL.
